Classic-CoreImage - How to use Microsoft Remote Desktop on a Mac to connect to a CoreImage computer

Introduction

Microsoft's Remote Desktop application allows you to see and control a computer remotely from a Mac.

To remotely log into a Classic-CoreImage Windows machine:

  • Use a Mac running Apple macOS 10.13.x (High Sierra) or above--or use a Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) session as an intermediate "jump point" to the target Classic-CoreImage computer.
  • Be a member of the Remote Desktop Users group on the target Classic-CoreImage computer you wish to remote to.  To gain membership, request access.
  • The Device Name of the Classic-CoreImage computer you wish to remote to.

*Note that these instructions only apply to connecting to a Classic-CoreImage; one cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to remotely log into an Intune-managed CoreImage.

Note:  Personal devices (Windows or Mac) can no longer use the VPN to connect to Michigan Medicine resources.  Please use WVD as an intermediate "jump point" to remote to the target CoreImage computer.

Depending on what type of Mac you are using (managed or personally owned) and where you are located, your method to connect will change:

  1. Type:  CoreMac/IzzyMac
         Location:  At Michigan Medicine
         Instructions:  See below.

  2. Type:  CoreMac/IzzyMac
         Location:  Remote
         Instructions:  See below

  3. Type:  Personally owned Mac
         Location:  At Michigan Medicine
Instructions:  Use Windows Virtual Desktop after connecting to the eduroam wireless network, and then use the Instructions section in this article to use the Remote Desktop Connection application from within a WVD session

  4. Type:  Personally owned Mac
          Location:  Remote
Instructions:  Use Windows Virtual Desktop instead of the VPN, and then use the Instructions section in this article to use the Remote Desktop Connection application from within a WVD session.

Instructions

For scenarios A and B, use the following instructions.  Scenarios C and D above have links to their own instructions.

  1. Install Microsoft Remote Desktop from the Apple App Store.

  2. If using a CoreMac or IzzyMac that is not on-site, launch the Cisco Secure Client.

  3. Launch the Microsoft Remote Desktop app.

  4. Click Add PC.

  5. Enter the Classic-CoreImage PC's name:  name.umhs.med.umich.edu where "name" is the Device Name of the CoreImage PC you want to connect to.

If you have issues connecting to the name, follow the instruction at the end of this article*

  6. Click Add.

  7. On the Microsoft Remote Desktop window, to connect, double-click the computer you added.

  8. Provide your username (umhs\uniqname) and UMICH password.

  9. Log in and you will have access to the machine as if you were sitting in front of it.

If you are unable to resolve the remote Classic-CoreImage PC's name after making sure you have appended umhs.med.umich.edu to the name, clear your Mac's DNS (Domain Name System) cache and try again:

  1. If open, close Microsoft Remote Desktop
  2. Press Command+Space to open Spotlight
  3. Search for "Terminal".
  4. Press Enter to open it.
  5. Type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache;sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  6. Press Enter.
    1. The command won't give any feedback; it will just return to the prompt.
  7. Close Terminal
  8. Relaunch Microsoft Remote Desktop to try again. (see step 5 above)
