Meridian - Faculty Planning Glossary


Introduction

These are terms as defined within the Planning application:

Instructions

  • Admin Department: The tenure-granting departmental home for a faculty member
  • Appointments: All the roles a faculty member has at U-M, regardless of department, school, or FTE (can include 0.0 FTE "dry" appointments)
  • Clinical Session: A unit of work for clinical faculty, defined as 4-hours (1/2 day) within a given week
  • Division: The sub-departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery
  • Faculty Member: A current U-M faculty member who has an active appointment at the Medical School
  • FTE: Full-time equivalent; this is per appointment. Each faculty member's appointment FTEs sum to a faculty member's overall FTE
  • Headcount: The whole-number count of faculty members in a department/division
  • Location: Currently, a U-M outpatient clinical site (may be expanded to inpatient locations in the future)
  • Iteration: A multi-month planning timeframe; finished plans are due at the end of this timeframe
  • Main Appointing Department; The department of the faculty member's highest FTE appointment
  • Placeholder (formerly Planning Position): A way for which you can indicate a planned change for an unspecified faculty member
    • Most commonly this is a new hire (who isn't in your department yet), or it is some other change (E.g. a departure) for which you are not yet sure with whom it is associated
  • Planned Change: The forecasted faculty career change event in which Medical School Finance is interested
    • New Hire, Departure, Retention, Change in Track/Rank (Promotion), Clinical Activity in new location/affiliation, and Other
  • Rank: The job title of the faculty member (E.g. Research Professor, LEO Lecturer, etc.)
  • Total Compensation: The sum of the individual compensation amounts across a faculty member's appointments
  • Track: The current career path for the faculty member (Instructional [Tenure], Clinical, Lecturer, Research, Supplemental)
