Microsoft Edge - User Experience on Non-Kiosk CoreImage Computers

Introduction

User Experience on Non-Kiosk CoreImage Computers

Once Microsoft Edge is installed, users will experience a few changes when they log into Windows on a non-Kiosk CoreImage computer.  The changes differ depending on whether the user is logging into the computer for the first time or whether they have logged in before.

Instructions

You have logged into this CoreImage computer before.

Once Microsoft Edge has installed on a non-Kiosk CoreImage computer you have used before, Internet Explorer will no longer appear on the taskbar.

Windows 10:

Windows 11:

Default web browser:

If your default web browser was Internet Explorer, it will automatically switch to Microsoft Edge.  Two separate Windows logins are required for this to happen.  Though you may switch back to Internet Explorer, HITS strongly recommends that you make the switch to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of its support for modern web standards and seamless integration with Microsoft 365 web services.

In some cases, if Google Chrome is your default browser, it may switch to Microsoft Edge.  Ideally this should not happen.  However, if it does, you may switch back to Google Chrome.

The new Microsoft Edge will replace its predecessor's shortcut with an updated icon.

When launching Edge for the first time on a CoreImage computer that is not a Kiosk, the following will occur:

Microsoft Edge will seamlessly log you in using your Michigan Medicine email (uniqname@med.umich.edu) and begin to sync your profile from Microsoft 365.

Your profile is used to sync your history, favorites, extensions, browser data, and other settings across not only CoreImage computers but to wherever you use Microsoft Edge—whether that is a personal computer or mobile device.

Microsoft Edge's "Start" behavior will show one of the following two pages depending how the CoreImage is configured:

  • The default Michigan Medicine internal homepage
    --or--
  • A homepage assigned to that computer (e.g., your department's homepage).

Microsoft Edge's "Start" behavior can be configured by you to either show its "New Tab" page, open where you left off, or open a set of webpages.  Once you configure this on one computer, the changes should follow you to other computers where you are logged into Edge.

The Home Button is initially set to load one of the following two pages depending how the CoreImage is configured:

  • The default Michigan Medicine internal homepage
    --or--
  • A homepage assigned to that computer (e.g., your department's homepage).

The Home Button can be configured to open a different webpage than the webpage(s) configured to open when Edge starts up.  This is different from how the Home Button worked in Internet Explorer.  Once you configure this on one computer, the changes should follow you to other computers where you log into Edge.

You are logging into this CoreImage computer for the first time.

Please refer to the previous section to note how Microsoft Edge will function the first time you start it—whether you have logged into the CoreImage computer before or are doing so for the first time.  The following items show the small cosmetic differences a new user login to the computer will have versus one where the user logged in prior to Microsoft Edge being installed.

After logging into Windows for the first time on a non-Kiosk CoreImage computer, the Microsoft Edge icon will appear on the taskbar instead of Internet Explorer.
