Instructions
Authentication
Users will now be required to authenticate using their level 2 credentials to allow for better logging and reduce issues with users receiving spam pages.
Note: users logged into standard mode core image PC's should automatically authenticate when accessing the paging website
How it works?
- Utilizing level 2 credentials
Why is it required?
- Current lack of authentication results in SPAM pages and other inappropriate pages to providers
- Allows for more accurate auditing and logging
- Compliance and Information Assurance push to end unauthenticated paging
Core Image
- Standard Mode core image workstations will automatically authenticate a user on the paging website
- Users on core image and connected through VPN will pass through authentication
- Access from off network and without VPN will require 2 Factor Authentication
Kiosk
- Kiosk users will always be required to authenticate when accessing website directly, but those users can still utilize direct paging abilities from within MiChart, i.e. treatment team print group
- Enhancements introduced to allow for better passthrough authentication when accessing paging site via MiChart, i.e. ED UMHS Paging button
MiChart
- Direct paging from MiChart, i.e. treatment team, will not require authentication
- Personalized dashboard links may require updating with the new url
Home Screen
Users will notice a revamped Home screen, offering numerous options on the left side of the screen along with familiar links on this main page.

Users can enter a pager number or last name in the search box on the Home page or select Send Page from the menu on the left of the screen

Coverage
Users can set coverage for their pager or the coverage of other pagers
Coverage of My Pager
Click on the blue hyperlink to set coverage of your own pager
You can select pagers for yours to cover or select pagers to cover your own. This is done by selecting Add Pager next to the relevant section.
To remove coverage, return to this section and click on the X on the right side
Users can set coverage for other pagers by using the search box on the main Coverage page, then following the same steps outlined above using Add Pager
Personal Paging Groups
Users will now have the ability to create their own personal paging groups within the website. This can allow you to quickly page multiple people you may need to frequently contact together. These personal paging groups differ from the standard programmed paging groups that are hardcoded to individual pagers. Users who currently create personal paging groups using the unauthenticated SPOK Smart Web app will need to convert their cookie-based groups to this new paging group functionality.
Difference between Personal and Programmed Paging Groups
- Personal paging groups are not burned onto a pager (like programmed groups)
- Programmed paging groups include groups which are available globally from the paging website, E.g, Charge Nurses; while personal groups are unique to the individual
- Pages sent to personal paging group(s) are sent one at a time. In the past these personal groups would go away (and have to be recreated) if a user or device support had to clear their cookies.
- Pages to programmed groups are sent as one page to everyone at the same time (using programmed groups is the preferred way)
To create a new group, enter a new group name in the box then click Add
After the group is created, click on the hyperlinked name to edit the group (1). If at any time you wish to delete a group, click the X on the right side of the screen for that group (2)
Click on Add Pager
Enter a pager # or Last name to search, then select the number to add to your group
You'll then see the pager added to the group. If at any time you wish to remove a pager from within a group, open the group and click the X next to that particular pager
Paging a personal group
To page a group you have created, navigate to the Send Page section, then select My Groups
Select the group you wish to page
You will see your group listed in the Send to: section. Enter clinical or non clinical page you wish to send and click Send
Status/Settings
Users will now be able to set their pager status and enable an email copy page any time they need. Note, this differs from the full time Page Copy to Text message functionality available HERE.
Selecting the Radio Button associated with the desired status will immediately update the pager.
FAQ
How will VPN users access the website and will they receive Level 2 authentication?
- On a Core Image workstation with the VPN activated it will pass through your credentials. Access from off our network without the VPN will require 2FA. Kiosk workstations will require authentication.
For Kiosk workstations, what is the period for which a new authentication will be required for users who keep the paging website up?
- A user can authenticate once and if the browser continues to run, they won't be prompted again
Do clerks use a standard mode device?
- Yes
Will users be able to call the hospital operator and have them page someone to a call-back number?
- Yes
How will paging from MiChart be impacted?
- No change to the MiChart paging functionality, paging links will launch to the new paging site
Will UMHS links still be available in MiChart?

Given the level 2 requirement, how does this preserve the access from the VA? How will affiliated organizations be impacted - (VA and Chelsea Providers)?
- For the time being, affiliated organizations - VA, UMHW, Trinity, Sparrow - will use the old paging website that does not require authentication. Access to the site will be limited to IP subnets provided by these organizations.
Will I have access to my personal paging groups?
- Users who currently create personal paging groups using the unauthenticated SPOK Smart Web app will need to convert their cookie-based groups to the paging group functionality that the new Paging website provides.
Why are the paging priorities being updated?
- The paging priorities are being aligned with the future Secure Chat priorities. Timeline for the Secure Chat priorities is TBD
Is there a limit to the number of pagers you can add to a personal paging group?
- There is no technical limitation, but if very large groups are required we suggest use of a programmed paging group.
- Personal paging groups page each individual separately one after the other. So the last person could be paged a significant time after the first if the group is large.
