Medical School: Use of Research Software on Personal Computers

Introduction

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) can no longer offer research application licensing for personal devices.

The threat landscape for cyber-related incidents is on the rise, and with the support of MM leadership, we are implementing fundamental changes within our environment this year. These changes will make using a non-managed device increasingly more difficult (e.g., the  VPN Restriction project, where in summer 2024, VPN access will be limited to devices managed by Michigan Medicine).

Instructions

If you are part of the Medical School and do not have access to a HITS-managed device, we suggest the following options to obtain one:

  1. For Medical School PhD Students who were not provided with a managed device at matriculation, please use the Students Laptop Exception Request Form. This will check your eligibility to receive a device through HITS.
  2. For faculty and PostDocs, please review the Medical School Basic Science Device Program guidelines to see if you are eligible for a managed device.
  3. Acquire a managed device by collaborating with your department to procure one through the HITS department Computers and Mobile Devices Ordering Page.

If access to a Michigan Medicine Managed device is unavailable and the above-mentioned options are not feasible, you can coordinate with your lab manager, faculty, or department chair to procure a discounted license through the ITS Software Store. It's important to note that using personal computers or non-managed corporate devices does not align with Michigan Medicine's overall Managed Device Strategy. Therefore, we strongly discourage using personal computers for research.
