Introduction
The Clinical Grading tab in ARB>Grading allows a clerkship to see the results of multiple assessors evaluating students in the Clinical Trunk, and then, as the Clerkship Director, assign a final grade to each student and then release those grades to the students.
As with other grading types, once grades are released, they will be available to students in Learning Outcomes, and are added to a report that the Registrar team generates periodically in order to upload new or revised grades to MPathways.
NOTE: as of Fall 2024, Clinical Grading supports the new "criterion referenced grading" model (read more below).
Instructions
The Clinical Grading page is a tab under the Grading hub. It is only available to those who are authorized to do clinical trunk grading, notably clerkship directors and clerkship coordinators.
On this page you can:
- Click on a student's row to open the "Final Grade" window
- Review the student's assessment scores, assessor comments, and other outcomes
- Select a Final Grade
- If you are not finished, you can simply close this window at any time (all answers are auto-saved)
- If you are finished, click the "Finalize" button
- Enter Direct Observation results, Professionalism scores, and manage Other Assessment Scores
- View and print Grading Reports for each student
Once finished with some or all of the grading for your students, you must Release the grades before they are viewable to the students:
- Click the dark blue "Release Grades" button
- This releases the grades of any students whose Grade Status was "Finalized"
The release process makes visible the grades in students' Learning Outcomes, and adds them to the report the Registrar team runs periodically to upload grades to MPathways.
At any time, graders can return to the page as needed where they can:
- Continue working on Not Started or Started (unfinalized) grades
- Reopen a grade (if Finalized or Released) by clicking on a student row and clicking the Reopen button
- After reopening, change the grade
- Clicking "Finalize" re-submits the grade (and re-releases it, if it had been previously released before reopening)
Criterion Referenced Grading
New for Fall 2024, criterion referenced grading is a new model for Clinical Grading, which uses standardized assessment questions across specific competency domains to determine the student's final grade, in order to grade more consistently across all students and clerkships. Per decisions by the Evaluation and Assessment group within OMSE, these five competency domains are:
- Patient Care
- Medical Knowledge
- Communication
- Professionalism and Leadership, Teamwork & Inter-professionalism
- Practice-Based Learning & Improvement
Direct Observation, Professionalism, other exams (e.g. Shelf exam), and Length of Contact are also factored into determining the final grade.
Within ARB, both clerkships and students can see the results of these assessments and how they roll up into what is called the Competency Domain Summary, which looks like this:
Within each domain, users can click on the domain name to see a 'heatmap' which is a graphic illustrating how each assessment question was scored by the student's assessors.
Both the Summary and heatmaps are available within Learning Outcomes in ARB once grades are released, as well as viewable by clerkships during the grading process.
(NOTE: clerkships can see additional details to help validate and determine the final grade; talk to the Evaluation and Assessment group for more information.)
