Microsoft Edge - Built-in PDF reader powered by Adobe


Introduction

Microsoft will launch the new version of the built-in PDF reader in its Edge web browser that is powered by Adobe’s PDF rendering engine. The new PDF reader ensures that there is no loss of functionality and delivers an enhanced PDF experience. This experience includes richer rendering, improved performance, strong security for PDF handling, and greater accessibility. General availability rollout will begin in October 2025.  More information is available here.

Review the instructions section below to understand how to properly utilize Adobe Acrobat premium features in Microsoft Edge with the new Adobe PDF rendering engine.

Instructions

  1. Open any PDF with Microsoft Edge.

  2. Click the button located at the top-right of your window that says Edit with Acrobat.


  3. If you do not see this button, click the ellipses (three dots) in the same area.


  4. Do not select Start 7-day free trial or Not now.

  5. Instead, click Sign in at the bottom of the pop-up window.


  6. Login to your Adobe account using your UMICH email address.


  7. Complete other authentication steps, as necessary.

  8. Click Add extension to install the "Adobe Acrobat: PDF edit, convert, sign tools" extension to Microsoft Edge.


  9. When installation is complete, you'll see a screen that says, "Adobe Acrobat for Microsoft Edge is installed."


  10. You will be returned to your PDF document.

  11. Notice the additional buttons and features on the sides surrounding your document.


  12. You can begin using the Adobe premium features with the new Adobe rendering engine in Microsoft Edge.
