WaaS - "Own Your Upgrade!" Self-Serve Windows Updates for Classic-CoreImage devices

Introduction

IMPORTANT!
The Windows 11 upgrade has two parts: Online and Offline.  Once you start the upgrade, you may have a lengthy wait as the installer downloads and begins upgrading the device in the background.  You may continue to use the device during this "online" period.  Once the computer reboots to finish the upgrade, it may take anywhere from 20 minutes to possibly over 80 minutes during this "offline" period before you can log in again.  Newer devices will complete this upgrade more quickly than older ones.

When you're connected to a Michigan Medicine wired or wireless network or connected via VPN, you may see a notification like the one below, saying "Software changes are required" (#1).  Selecting "Click here for options" will bring up more information about the change, including an Upgrade Deadline (#2). This deadline represents the final day by which an upgrade to your device MUST occur.

Instructions

  • Choose "Right Now" and you will be directed to the Software Center and prompted to begin the upgrade process.
  • Pick "Snooze" and you can select from a variety of time delays, after which you'll be reminded again that you need to install the update.
  • If you select "Not Now," the upgrade prompt will disappear but will return the next day, and so on, until you select either "Right Now" or "Snooze."

Ultimately, when your Upgrade Deadline is reached, the update will run the next time your device powers up while it is connected to a Michigan Medicine network or via VPN.

The first part of the Windows 11 upgrade will take a long and variable amount of time in the background, possibly up to two hours.  During this "online" portion of the upgrade, you can continue to use the device.  However, a reboot is needed to complete the upgrade.  Once the device reboots, it goes into the "offline" portion of the upgrade which may take as little as 20 minutes or possibly longer than 80 minutes, depending on the age and performance of the device.

The mode of your computer will determine which upgrade instructions you need to follow. Use this article to find your Classic-CoreImage device's mode. Intune-CoreImage devices behave like Standard mode Classic-CoreImage devices.
