Windows Virtual Desktop - Windows Client Installation


Introduction

Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) is a Microsoft-based service that provides Michigan Medicine faculty and staff with remote access to a virtual Windows 11 desktop.  This virtual desktop is similar to an HITS CoreImage Windows device.  Additional information is available here.

Windows Virtual Desktop is available via a desktop client application (recommended method) for Mac or Windows or via a web browser for incidental use.

The following features require the Remote Desktop client application:

Authentication

Signing into Windows Virtual Desktop requires your Michigan Medicine email (uniqname@med.umich.edu) and Duo Two-Factor Authentication.

 

Instructions

  1. Click https://aka.ms/wvd/clients/windows. This will start the download of the Remote Desktop application's installer.

  2. Click Open file.

    Note:  This screenshot is from Microsoft Edge.  Other web browsers may require different actions to save and then launch the installer. If the file automatically downloads and your browser doesn't present a link to open the file, look in your Downloads folder for it. Once you find it, double-click it to move on to step 3.

  3. The Remote Desktop Setup Wizard will launch. Click Next.


  4. Check the box to indicate I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and click Next.


  5. Select the Installation Scope (local administrator privileges are required if you select Install for all users of this machine), and click Install.


  6. Click Finish.


  7. Click Subscribe.


  8. Enter your Michigan Medicine email (uniqname@med.umich.edu) and click Next.


    1. If you see the following, select Work or school account.


  9. Your Michigan Medicine email (uniqname@med.umich.edu) will auto-fill. Click Next.


  10. Enter your UMICH password and click Sign In.


  11. Complete Duo two-factor authentication.

  12. If presented, uncheck the Allow my organization to manage my device box and click OK.


  13. Click Done.


  14. Double-click on Virtual Desktop. If you are using multiple monitors refer to this article for customizations.


  15. Enter your UMICH password and click OK.


  16. Your Windows Virtual Desktop session will open, and you can begin using it.
