Windows Virtual Desktop - Joining Zoom from your computer when using WVD


Introduction

Zoom is a resource-intensive application. In order to reduce audio delay and improve quality, users should run Zoom sessions directly from their device rather than within a Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) session.

Instead, HITS recommends using Microsoft Teams with WVD.  Note: Do not use Teams if you are accessing WVD using a web browser.  Only use Teams if you are connecting to WVD using the Remote Desktop application (Windows PC or Mac).

Instructions

Join a Zoom Meeting from your Device while using WVD

When it is time to join the Zoom meeting:

1. Minimize your Windows Virtual Desktop session's window.

Windows 10/11: Click on the minimize icon ( _ ) in the title bar.

macOS: Hover your mouse over the top of screen to reveal the menu bar. Click on the green button to exit full screen.

2. Open the Zoom application on your device.

3. Click Sign In.


4. Click Sign In with SSO.


5. Enter umich in the Company Domain box and click Continue.


6. Enter your uniqname and UMICH password.


7. Complete the Duo two-factor authentication process.

8. If prompted, check the box to Always allow umich.zoom.us to open links of this type in the associated app, then click Open.


9. Click Join.


10. Enter the meeting ID from the invite you received, along with Your Name, and click Join.


10. Enter the meeting's passcode to join the meeting.

11. You should now be participating in the Zoom meeting from your device.

 

Using Windows Virtual Desktop and Zoom at the same time

You can switch between your device's desktop and your Windows Virtual Desktop session.

Windows: Use the Virtual Desktop taskbar icon pictured below to maximize and minimize the session's window while using the Zoom application.


If you want to toggle back and forth between a full screen Windows Virtual Desktop, use the minimize button ( _ ) at the top of the screen and the Virtual Desktop taskbar icon pictured above to maximize the session's window.

macOS: Hover your mouse over the top of the screen and click the green button to exit running in full screen.

Click the green button again to restore running the Windows Virtual Desktop session in full screen.

Web browser: Minimize and maximize the web browser's window to jump back and forth between the Zoom application and the Windows Virtual Desktop session window.



Sharing Your Windows Virtual Desktop session's screen

You can use Zoom's Share Screen feature to show your Windows Virtual Desktop session's content to the meeting's participants.

1. While in the Zoom meeting window, click Share Screen.

You will be prompted to "Select a window or an application that you would like to share."

2. Click on the picture showing your Virtual Desktop and then click Share.


Note: The entire content of the Virtual Desktop window will be visible during the meeting until you stop sharing.

 

3. You can stop sharing at any time by clicking Stop Share in the Zoom toolbar.

If the meeting is running in full-screen and you do not see the Zoom toolbar, you will need to access it by hovering your mouse over the top of the screen until it appears.

 

Leaving a Zoom meeting while using Windows Virtual Desktop

To leave a Zoom meeting while using your Windows Virtual Desktop session, you will need to access the Zoom application running on your device.

1. Access the Zoom toolbar.

  • You may need to minimize your Windows Virtual Desktop session's window to gain access to the app.
  • You may need to hover your mouse over the top of the display until the Zoom toolbar appears.

2. Once the Zoom toolbar is visible, click on More.

3. Click End or Leave in the drop-down menu.

  • You should no longer be participating in the Zoom meeting
