AV - Conference/Classroom Audio Troubleshooting

Instructions

General Tips

  • Be sure the source is turned on and selected (microphones, computers, players etc..) on the Crestron Touch Panel located on the lectern, wall, or on table.
  • Lavalier microphones should be worn between the collar and chest of the shirt for best audio quality, and handheld microphones should be held roughly 6 inches in front of the mouth and spoken directly into the head of the microphone.

CoreImage Room PC - No sound

Is the volume turned up for the computer?

  • Left click Volume icon on bottom right corner of desktop and verify the volume is turned up. (You should hear a chime when changing the volume from this location)
  • Right click the Volume and select Sound Settings and ensure Speakers/Headphones or Crestron is selected as the input device. The device you select will depend on the system you are using. You will see the volume bar bouncing to the right of each output device if sound is present.

Is the volume control on the Crestron keypad/touch panel turned up?

  •  Button panels have a round knob that need to be turned to the right and touch panels have separate volume controls on the touch screen.
    • On touch panels it is usually labeled Program or Video in the audio section of the panel.
  • Crestron keypad/touch panels have a mute option, be sure the audio is not muted
    • Keypad have a separate button for muting audio.
    • Touch panels typically have a control on the right side of the main page, it may flash red or be highlighted if it is muted. It looks like a speaker with a slash through it.
  •  Is the volume of the player (Youtube, VLC, Media Player, etc) turned up?

User's Laptop – No sound

Check audio settings on the laptop and ensure the volume is up (they may be different depending on the Operating System)

  •  If using VGA connection, make sure the 3.5mm audio cable is plugged all the way into the headphone jack of the laptop.
    • If still no sound, unplug the 3.5mm audio cable and see if sound is coming from laptop speakers. If so, then there may be an issue with the AV system.  In this case, please submit a ticket or contact the HITS Service Desk to have a ticket assigned to the Audio Visual Support team. This is an older connection method and is no longer implemented.
  • If using HDMI connection
    • Some spaces may not pass audio through the HDMI connection and will need to use the 3.5mm audio cable from the VGA connection. If this is the case, it should be outlined in the room instructions.
    •  If going directly into a TV via HDMI cable, make sure the TV is not muted and check if the sound settings of the laptop has selected the TV as it's output device.
  •  If you are using Teams, Zoom, or any other web conferencing software that you are checking the software audio settings as well as the USB connection in the conference table.

Microphones aren't working- no sound

Is the microphone on?

  •  Lectern gooseneck microphones should always be on but may be muted or turned down. Check the Voice level and use the Up and Down arrows or Slider to increase the volume slowly until you hear yourself through the microphone. If muted see below.
  •   Wireless microphones (handheld and lapel) are battery powered and have on/off switches. On some handhelds the switch may be towards the bottom of the microphone and hard to see.
  • Some wireless microphones have rechargeable batteries and need to be set on the charging station after each use to charge, others have replaceable batteries and extras should be available in the room.

Is the microphone muted on the Crestron Touch Panel?

  • Underneath the volume control for the microphone labeled Voice there is a mute button. It looks like a speaker with a line through it. Be sure this is not highlighted or flashing. This would indicate it is muted. If so, touch that button to unmute the microphone.

If the microphone is on and unmuted, but still no sound, please submit a ticket or contact the HITS Service Desk to have a ticket assigned to the Audio Visual Support team.

There is an unusual noise coming from AV System

Is the noise a beeping sound?

  • This could be a symptom of a bad battery in the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply: AKA Battery Backup)
    • Only attempt if you feel confident you know what you are doing.
      • Cycle power on a rack based system by locating the the UPS, it is often located at the bottom of the equipment racks. Press and hold the OFF button until it starts to beep, and release. Do not wait for beep to end. Wait at least 10 seconds, then press and hold the ON button until it starts to beep. Please note that the on and off buttons may be the same button on some models.
    • If you do not feel comfortable performing this task please submit a ticket or contact the HITS Service Desk to have a ticket assigned to the Audio Visual Support team.

Is the noise higher in pitch and constant?

  • This could be a symptom of a bad fan in the rack/or a device. Please submit a ticket or contact the HITS Service Desk to have a ticket assigned to the Audio Visual Support team.
