Office 365 - How to: Enable EndNote's Cite While You Write add-in after installing Office 365


Introduction

If EndNote was installed prior to installing Office 365, the Cite While You Write add-in won't appear and needs to be reenabled.

Instructions

  1. Close Microsoft Word and PowerPoint if you have them open before continuing.

  2. Run Configure EndNote.exe from either of the following version-specific locations:
    1. EndNote X20 is found here – C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote 20\
    2. EndNote X21 is found here – C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote 21\


  3. In the EndNote Configuration window:
    1. Select Configure EndNote components, then select Next.


    2. Check the Cite While You Write add-in for Microsoft Office checkbox, then select Next.


    3. You may receive a UAC prompt. Follow the Just-in-Time (JIT) Elevated Privileged Access instructions.


    4. Select Finish.


  4. Open Word and verify that EndNote shows in the Ribbon.

 

Troubleshooting

If EndNote is not in the Ribbon after running Configure EndNote.exe, follow these steps.

  1. Open Microsoft Word, go to File > Options.


  2. In the Word Options dialog, click Trust Center, then Trust Center Settings...


  3. In the Trust Center dialog, click Add-ins.

  4. Ensure Disable all Application Add-ins (may impair functionality) is NOT checked, then click OK.


  5. In the Word Options dialog, click Add-ins, then click Go...


  6. Check the box next to EndNote Cite While You Write, then click OK.


  7. Restart Microsoft Word.

  8. Verify EndNote is in the Ribbon.
