Note: This is especially important for students who went to undergrad/grad school at the University of Michigan prior to medical school as your email forwarding is not automatically set up. Students are not advised to turn off their email forwarding from umich gmail to med accounts as then two inboxes would need to be managed to ensure no emails or communications are missed. Various systems in Michigan Medicine use one or the other. Further information can be received by contact central campus ITS. |
Email Address: Your uniqname is also part of your email address: uniqname@med.umich.edu.
- Good to know: you have both a ‘@med.umich.edu’ email AND a ‘@umich.edu’ email address. Messages sent to either address automatically go to the same Outlook inbox, tied to your @med.umich.edu account.
- Important! Some apps require a specific email address to access U-M or Michigan Medicine accounts for the first time:
- Use your @med.umich.edu address to access Michigan Medicine Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook
- Use your @umich.edu address to access Google Drive and Adobe Creative Cloud
The official email system of Michigan Medicine is Outlook. You are required to use your Michigan Medicine email with your level 2 in order to help protect patient health information and keep sensitive data secure.
University of Michigan central campus email uses Google Gmail (your uniqname@umich.edu). By default, Michigan Medicine does not allow access to this email address.
- However, remember some university wide systems only email your uniqname@umich.edu.
Recommendation: To ensure any emails sent to your uniqname@umich.edu are not missed, it is best to utilize your @med.umich.edu Outlook email as it receives both emails sent to your @umich.edu and @med.umich.edu emails.

Step 1. Navigate to your central campus profile page. Log in with your level 1 password. |

Step 2. When logged in, scroll down to the Email Forwarding section. If your uniqname@med.umich.edu email address is not listed, Select the +Add Address option and enter your email. |

Step 3. Send a test verification email from a personal email to your uniqname@umich.edu address. Verify it shows in your uniqname@med.umich.edu inbox by accessing your Michigan Medicine email online. |
