Introduction
Starting July 2025 all Creator Subscriptions that are primarily used with the Michigan Medicine Tableau Server need to be managed by HITS. These Directions cover how to:
- deactivate any old licenses
- activate using your account

Open Manage Product Keys
- On your computer open Tableau Desktop
- If you haven't activated the software it will prompt you to for your demographic information
- Go to the Help menu and select Manage Product Keys...
Deactivate Old Keys
- In the Manage Product Keys dialog box, look for any keys that start with TC or TD.
- Select the product key and click Deactivate.
- Repeat for any other keys starting with TD or TC.
Activate Creator Subscription
- In the Manage Product Keys dialog box, select the Activate button
- Choose Activate by signing into a server
- Sign in to tab.med.umich.edu (you need to be on the MM network or VPN for this)
- Enter your username password if prompted and choose the Michigan Medicine Site
- You should see a green checkmark and click Continue
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my Creator Key?
We are using Login Based License Management so no key is required. You just need to sign in to the Michigan Medicine Tableau Server and it authorize the software.
I get a message that Tableau Maintenance is Expiring. How do I stop it?
This is a common message at renewal time. Once HITS and Salesforce complete the renewal processes you will no longer receive this message.
How do I get a Tableau Server Creator license?
In addition to the Tableau Desktop and Prep applications Creator Subscription users are given enhanced capabilities in Tableau Server:
- In the browser WebEdit and Create
- Datasources
- Prep Flows
- Create and use Virtual Connections
- Schedule Linked Prep Flows
Your license has to be through HITS (not through ITS) to obtain a Creator Role. They can be requested from the Enterprise Tableau Tools order guide under Request Tableau licensing assistance.
