Best Practices
Hiding Results
Sometimes faculty want to hide the results and selecting the correct answer from displaying to students in the lecture hall. Note if you move the menu from one monitor screen to another in the lecture hall, the iClicker Menu will change back to the select polling option. Select poll again to bring back to red stop option.
Title Slide
Have a title slide displaying of your presentation to instruct students how to connect before beginning your presentation.
Be cognizant of slide real estate
A long case with multiple options can be difficult to navigate iClicker Cloud's menu. While it can be collapsed by double clicking on the Blue Cloud. This can be done even when a poll is active; the blue cloud will pulse with circles indicating a poll is live.
Question types
The most common question type used is multiple choice. One thing to note is iClicker always presents answers A-E on the student device, regardless what your powerpoint slide shows. So if you have less than 5 responses, A-E will still show as options.
Vanderbilt's Center for Teaching provides an excellent article on writing multiple choice questions along with information on audience response systems.
Lastly, review the different iClicker Cloud question types to help decide what type of question can be fit your learning objective. For example, a creative use of Target questions can be utilized if you want students to have more than 5 plausible distractors to choose from.
Read the room
Be cognizant of how many students are in the room; don't set a strict amount of answers if using iClicker for formative assessment. It's better to keep the momentum going with the presentation rather than long, awkward pauses.
Practice
If possible, practice in the lecture hall to become used to the way the system operates. It will reduce stress and anxiety when using iClicker in front of students. A video showing some of the best practices in action will be made available shortly.
