Microsoft Excel (M365) – Restore missing add-ins after Windows upgrade


Introduction

If you are missing an Excel add-in after a Windows (WaaS) upgrade, or the Add-ins ribbon is missing, you can attempt reinstallation of the add-in.

  • The Excel add-in file (XLAM, XLA, or XLL) is required in order to complete the steps below.
  • Do not use the Home ribbon > Add-ins button; the functionality of this button (add-in store) is disabled by policy.

Instructions

1. Verify the Add-ins ribbon is enabled

  • Navigate to File > Options > Customize Ribbon
  • Click to check the box next to Add-ins under the Customize the Ribbon section on the right (scroll down).

 

  • Click OK.
    • If the Add-ins ribbon reappears and your add-in is functional, you are done.
    • If your issue is not resolved, continue to step 2.

 

2. Enable the Developer ribbon

  • Navigate to File > Options > Customize Ribbon
  • Click to check the box next to Developer under the Customize the Ribbon section on the right (scroll down).
  • Click OK.

 

3. Navigate to the Developer ribbon and click Excel Add-ins

 

  • In the Add-ins dialog box, see if your add-in is listed and checked.
    • If it is not checked, click to check the box, then click OK.

 

  • If the Add-ins ribbon reappears and your add-in is functional, you are done.
  • If your issue is not resolved, continue to step 4.

 

4. Find the Excel add-in file location

  • Navigate to File > Options > Add-ins
  • Find your add-in in the list (you may have to scroll down) and click once to highlight it.
  • Note the Location (e.g., C:\Users\uniqname\OneDrive - Michigan Medicine\test-add-in.xlam).



5. Reinstall the add-in

  • Close Excel
  • Using Windows Explorer
    • Navigate to the folder location noted in step 4.
    • Right-click and cut (not copy) the add-in file.
    • Navigate to your Desktop and right-click and paste the add-in file.



  • Open Excel
    • Navigate to the Developer ribbon and click Excel Add-ins.
    • Click once to select your add-in.

 

    • You should be prompted to delete the add-in from the list since it is no longer located in the original folder.
      • Click Yes.



    • Click OK to close the dialog box.
  • Using Windows Explorer
    • Cut and paste the add-in file from your Desktop back to the original folder.



  • In Excel
    • Navigate to the Developer ribbon and click Excel Add-ins.
    • Click Browse.
    • Navigate to the folder location noted in step 4.
    • Click to select your add-in file, then click OK.



    • Click OK to close the dialog box.

 

6. Test your add-in

  • If the Add-ins ribbon reappears and your add-in is functional, you are done.
  • If the above steps did not resolve your issue, submit a ticket to HITS.
