Outlook - New Outlook's features, differences, set up, and support

Introduction

New Outlook is offered as an option on Intune-CoreImage devices and as a Virtual App for unmanaged devices.

   Having problems?

  • CoreImage:  Switch back to using Classic Outlook.
  • Outlook Virtual App:  Switch to using Windows Virtual Desktop.

Currently, New Outlook falls under the Minimum Support Model. The goals of the New Outlook Minimum Support Model are:

  • Ensuring users can switch back and forth between Classic and New Outlook on Intune-CoreImage devices.
  • Ensuring users can access the Outlook Virtual App.
  • Ensuring New Outlook self-help learning is available per this article and the Outlook Virtual App article.

In 2023, Microsoft released a new Outlook client in preview.  You may see it referred to as New Outlook.  As of version 2407, the current Outlook client is now officially known as Outlook (classic).  In August 2024, Microsoft transitioned the new client to General Availability (GA).  This means that commercial customers will receive full production support for New Outlook going forward.  It is also a significant milestone on Microsoft's roadmap to replacing Outlook Classic.  New Outlook is intended to replace Outlook Classic at a later date (to be determined).  New Outlook is currently in the "Opt In" phase where users can choose to try it out but are still able to revert to Classic Outlook if needed.

Microsoft built New Outlook from the ground up to provide a better user experience that more closely aligns to Outlook on the web. Some new features available in New Outlook include:

  • New visual experience. New Outlook comes with a simplified and more modern user interface, similar to Outlook on the web.
  • Undo send. Provides an undo button for several seconds after a message is sent, giving an opportunity to stop send to correct typos.
  • Snooze emails. Snooze an email to temporarily remove it from your inbox and schedule it to appear as a new email for later, when you can respond.
  • Pin messages. Allows you to pin important messages to the top of your Inbox for later review or reminder.
  • Sweep emails.  Quickly delete unwanted email in your Inbox.
  • Preserve declined meetings. Keep a meeting invitation on your calendar, even if you've declined the invitation
  • Favorite groups, people, categories. Find groups, people, or categories quicker by adding them to your Outlook favorites in the folder pane.
  • Teams meeting chat. When a meeting is created, either from Outlook or Teams, with Teams as the online meeting option, then meeting participants can chat in the meeting right from Outlook.
  • Online archive search results in primary mailbox.

Note: New Outlook is in active development and does not yet have feature parity with Classic Outlook.  It may be missing certain features you commonly use in Classic Outlook.  Based on Microsoft's internal development priorities, some features may be released soon, in the future, or not at all.  Review Microsoft's article for a more in-depth comparison: New and classic Outlook for Windows feature comparison.  Review the feature roadmap to see when Microsoft will release new features and review the What's New page for recently added capabilities.
