U-M Google Collaboration and Productivity Tools

Google at U-M is a Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals software bundle.

  • Access Google at U-M tools using your @umich.edu email and UMICH password.
  • Gmail and Calendar access are limited unless you are a U-M alumni with an existing account. 
    • This restriction is by design so faculty, students, and staff can receive all messages to their Outlook inbox, whether the message is sent to their @med.umich.edu or @umich.edu address.
  • Microsoft 365 is Michigan Medicine's preferred collaboration toolset.

Benefit Description
Google Drive
Create and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in real-time, online with your team. HIPAA data cannot be stored on Google Drive.
 
Use Microsoft OneDrive and SharePoint for similar collaboration features and enhanced security. 
Google Forms

Build questionnaires or quizzes and automatically collect responses in a spreadsheet.

Use Microsoft Forms for similar features and interoperability with Microsoft 365 tools. 

Storage U-M Google is available with 250GB of storage for active U-M faculty, staff, students, and sponsored affiliates, and 15GB of storage for alumni and retirees.

Handling Sensitive Information

U-M Google is not suitable for storing or creating content with PHI.
