HITS CoreImage and CoreMac - Managed Computers and Devices

Overview

Introduction

A managed computer is configured for work at Michigan Medicine. Get a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer that is fully equipped with the applications, network access, security features, and support needed to do your work from any location.

Managed computers provide a reliable, secure, and supportable environment tailored for Michigan Medicine. Each device, whether a desktop, laptop, or tablet, is configured and maintained by the HITS team to align with institutional standards. These managed devices come pre-loaded with essential software, robust security features, and regular updates, ensuring consistent performance and compliance with Michigan Medicine’s security and operational requirements.

Support

HITS provides support via our Help Desk (phone or chat) and Help Me Now (in person) locations for all managed devices. When contacting HITS with an issue, be prepared to provide the Device Name (TermID) of your computer. Each device is assigned a unique eight-character name. On most devices, this name is typically displayed on a physical tag, and it can also be found in the Microsoft Windows Settings application or in the Mac System Settings.

  • and more

Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project licenses are deployed on a limited basis throughout Michigan Medicine, more information is coming soon.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Michigan Medicine faculty and staff who use a managed general compute device have access to the following Adobe Creative Cloud products:

  • Acrobat Pro DC
  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • InDesign
  • Dreamweaver

Because U-M is an Adobe Creative Campus, this software is available at no charge. Individuals and departments do not need to purchase this software independently.

Software Procurement

Requesting Software & App List

Software that is not included in the managed computing standard software needs to be purchased by your department. HITS will then assist in having that software packaged and available for distribution in the Michigan Medicine network.

Verify that the software you need is available, either as part of the general compute standard software or through the Medical School for learning or research use.

To request a general compute software application, please submit a Help Center ticket. For Academic (learning and research) applications, submit a request to Academic IT

If it is not on the list, software may be procured in a variety of ways*:

  1. ITS: Departmental Purchases (external link)
  2. ITS Software Licensing and Distribution (external link): Licensed software products for use on university-owned computers

*All software purchases must be made in compliance with SPG 601.03-3 (external link)

Once the purchase has been made (or if it is already on the available list), contact HITS for implementation submitting a Help Center ticket

Application Software or Application Systems

If you or your department has a need for new, large-scale application software or systems:

  • Departmental staff or faculty members should contact their department administrator first with their needs.
  • Hospital department administrators may take these requirements forward to a HITS representative to determine next steps.
  • HITS will assist the department in completing the necessary processes, such as RFI (Request for Information), RFP (Request for Proposal), and capital funding requests.

For products over $5,000, you will need to follow the Capital Budget Office's process (external link) for securing capital funding.

Security

Anti-Virus Protection

As of November 15, 2021, CrowdStrike Falcon (external link) is the primary anti-malware software used on University-owned machines.

Administrative Access

Users of managed general computing devices have the option to request administrative access to their machine by requesting access via the Just-In-Time process, How To Create and Manage Your Just-in-Time (JIT) Elevated Privileged Access.
