Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) - Uninstalling the Remote Desktop client

Introduction

Microsoft is ending support for its Remote Desktop application (Windows).  They are replacing applications that are used to connect to Windows Virtual Desktop with their new Windows App (Summer 2024).  This article will guide you through uninstalling the Remote Desktop application--after which you can install the Windows App to connect to WVD.

Note: Please follow the same instructions below if you installed the Azure Virtual Desktop Preview application from the Microsoft Store.

Instructions

  1. Click on the start menu button, and type Add or remove programs.

  2. Click on Add or remove programs in the results.

  3. Search for Remote.

  4. Click the three-dot menu of Remote Desktop.

  5. Click Uninstall.

  6. Click Uninstall again. If the application was installed for "all users," you will be prompted to elevate your privileges to uninstall the application.  If you installed the application in your user profile, then the application will uninstall without prompting for elevation.

  9. Proceed with installing the Windows App from the Microsoft Store.
