Edge UMICH browser on Kiosks

Introduction

Web browser icon: Edge UMICH

The Edge UMICH browser is a custom internet browser developed to reduce the number of credential entries for clinicians on shared computers. Edge UMICH is unique to Kiosk computers, which are found in patient care areas, say “Kiosk” on the lock screen, and often have a badge reader (tap and go reader) for quick access.

Important User Note

Note: The Edge UMICH browser is required on Kiosks to access Microsoft 365 tools, including Outlook email, Teams, SharePoint, and more. Please use the Edge UMICH browser exclusively on Kiosks.

The standard Edge browser is still available on Kiosks to accommodate specialty workflows, such as keeping a browser window live between fast user changes.

The Edge UMICH browser enables direct access to Michigan Medicine applications including SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, One Drive, Policystat, the Paging website, and WebScheduler (for nursing scheduling), without an additional login. Edge UMICH also launches the new Clinical Home Page directly in SharePoint.

Instructions

To use the Edge UMICH browser on Kiosk computers:

  • Log in to the computer. Tap your badge or enter your UMICH credentials to unlock a Kiosk computer. Periodic password entry continues to be required at the beginning of a shift and once every four hours
  • Launch the Edge UMICH browser. Double-click the icon for Edge UMICH in the top left of the screen, or in the taskbar. The browser opens to the Clinical Home Page in Michigan Medicine’s SharePoint and automatically signs you in to your Microsoft account.
  • Once in the Edge UMICH browser, you can access Microsoft 365 applications (SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, etc.), PolicyStat, the paging website, WebScheduler, and more without stopping to enter credentials.

  • Access VPlaces using the new desktop shortcut. The Edge UMICH browser will not launch Citrix-hosted apps.

  • Watch the video for quick tips on using Edge UMICH and navigating SharePoint.

Passthrough authentication on Standard Mode CoreImage computers

Standard mode CoreImage Windows laptops and desktops, such as those in clinician work rooms or personally assigned laptops, already utilize passthrough authentication through the standard Microsoft Edge browser, when connected to Michigan Medicine WiFi or VPN. If you are offsite, sign into the Cisco Secure Client to activate VPN and enable passthrough authentication shortcuts.

The Edge UMICH browser is only needed on Kiosk computers to enable passthrough authentication due to the fast user switch settings that are in place.

CoreMac

CoreMacs should expect the login experience to remain the same at this time. For instance, to access Microsoft 365 apps on Office.com, CoreMacs need to login with UMICH credentials once every five days. CoreMacs with built-in TouchID should continue using it to speed login processes.

Troubleshooting the Edge UMICH browser

An Imprivata license is required for Edge UMICH credential passthrough to work correctly. If an employee has not been onboarded to Imprivata (e.g., new employees who have not yet enrolled) and does not have badge tap available, then Edge UMICH will not launch with the user’s own credentials and Microsoft account. Instead, they will be prompted to enter their credentials before accessing SharePoint.

Accessing VPlaces on Kiosks

On Kiosks, access VPlaces using the VPlaces desktop shortcut. The MiChart link on the Clinical Home Page will not launch apps in VPlaces in the Edge UMICH browser. On February 18, a new desktop shortcut was added to Kiosks to reach VPlaces, fixing access issues in the Edge UMICH browser. Access the VPlaces shortcut through the desktop icon or in the start menu.

Adding applications to passthrough authentication

HITS will continue working with application owners to identify and engineer other essential applications for passthrough authentication. Application owners can refer to the article, Request passthrough authentication for web-based applications on the process.

Current applications in process to enable passthrough authentication:

  • ServiceNow/The Michigan Medicine Help Center (help.med.umich.edu)
  • RL6 – Patient Safety Reporting
  • Qgenda
